Gestanin is designed to be taken during pregnancy. Gestanin is progestogen that is similar to the hormone progesterone. It is used to prevent habitual spontaneous abortion and premature labor. Women that suffer from progesterone deficiency, progestogen is proven to help in carrying fetuses to the term. It works by stimulating the secretory phase of endometrium cyclic changes which results in creation of appropriate conditions for the development of fertilized egg. It reduces contractive activity and sensitivity to oxytocin of the myometrium. It also stimulates the growth of lactiferous glands’ acini, increases fat deposits, facilitates liver glycogen storage, increases glucose utilization and improves production of aldosterone by the adrenal glands.
Take this medication exactly as your doctor has prescribed it. You must carefully follow all directions given. Avoid exceeding your dose or taking the medication longer than it was advised by your doctor. Swallow this medication with a full glass of water. It may be taken concurrently with food to avoid stomach upset.
This medicine is prescribed cautiously in case of renal disease, chronic heart failure, reduced tolerance to glucose. In case you are pregnant or breastfeeding a baby, consult your doctor before taking. This medication is not approved for children under the age 16.
This medicine is contraindicated in patients suffering from thrombophlebitis, cerebral blood circulation disorders, genital tumors, toxaemia (toxins in the bloodstream), and herpes. Due to occurrences of hypersensitivity to this medicine, Dubin-Johnson syndrome (an increase of conjugated bilirubin without elevation of liver enzymes) or Rotor syndrome (a benign autosomal recessive bilirubin disorder) this medication cannot be taken. It can also excrete into milk, so breastfeeding women should not take this medicine as well.
Possible side effect
A range of side effects known to be associated with this medicine includes: sickness, vomiting, giddiness, swelling, skin reactions such as rash and itching, breast tenderness, menstrual spotting between periods, dyspepsia, diarrhea, thrombophlebitis, thromboembolism, acne, weight gain, jaundice, hyperthermia, insomnia, mood changes, confusion, depression. In case these symptoms are bothersome, immediately inform your doctor.
In case you are not confident whether this medicinal product is compatible with other medicines or supplements, discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist. It is not advisable to combine the usage of this product with other drugs without your doctor’s permission as it may result in a serious aggravation.
If you have missed your dose, take it as soon as possible. In case it is near the time for the next dose, avoid taking the missed dose and keep your ordinary dosing schedule. Avoid compensating a missed dose by taking an extra one. It is also desirable to consult your doctor about follow-up actions if you have missed a few doses.
If you think you have overdosed the medication immediately contact your local poison center and notify your doctor or pharmacist. Do this even if there are no sings of discomfort or poisoning. You may need urgent medical attention. Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness; palpitations; fainting; unusual muscle movement or rigidity of the face, neck, or limbs; seizures; syncope.
This medication should be stored at room temperature between 20-25 C (68-77 F) away from sources of light, heat and moisture. Avoid storing it in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
